April Ashley and Alex Williams
Long before April Ashley was awarded her MBE, she had another title to her name: Duchess of Offa’s Dyke.
This was bestowed on her by Richard Booth when April was living in Hay-on-Wye. The full story of the part April played in putting the tiny border town on the international map is told in Alex Williams: The Survival of an Artist.
There are also recollections about April from people who met her at the time. Indeed, April coined the phrase: ‘If I can change, so can Hay.’
